About Our Reporting

The Daily Fin ReportDesk: Standards & Corrections

A printed account of how we gather, write, and correct the news of markets, money, and the household balance sheet — and a colophon of the people who put the paper to bed each evening.

Editorial Standards

Five rules the desk holds to before a story goes to bed. They are not aspirations — they are the checklist.

  1. Sourcing on the record

Where a fact is contested, we name the document, dataset, or person it comes from. Anonymous sourcing is used sparingly, never for colour, and always cleared by an editor.

  2. Numbers before narrative

Market data is checked against a primary feed before publication and cited at the timestamp it was filed. We do not round a move to make a story land harder.

  3. No house recommendations

Our reporters do not endorse individual securities, funds, or strategies. Where analysis is published, it is labelled, the assumptions are shown, and the author is named.

  4. Disclosure of interests

Writers disclose financial holdings, paid engagements, and familial ties that could plausibly affect a story. The disclosure sits beside the byline, not at the foot of the page.

  5. Independence from the desk

Commercial and editorial teams are firewalled. Sponsored material is labelled in plain type. Editorial copy is never reviewed by a partner before publication.

Corrections Policy

A correction is not an apology — it is a record. When a story is wrong, we say so on the same page the error first appeared, in the same typeface, with the corrected figure shown.

  1. Step 01

A reader or source flags the error. The reporter and a second editor confirm against primary material.

  2. Step 02

A correction is filed with a unique ledger reference, the original phrasing, the corrected phrasing, and the time filed.

  3. Step 03

The note is appended to the original article, surfaced on the homepage for 24 hours, and printed in the next morning edition.

  4. Step 04

Significant errors are escalated to a published "Editor's Note" signed by the duty editor and timestamped.
